Information about the history of Elgin Watch Company Elgin Watch Company was founded in 1864 as National Watch Company. Production began in 1866 when the factory was completed at Elgin, IL. Much of the funding came from a former Chicago mayor Benjamin W. Raymond. The first watch produced was an 18 size BW Raymond. Elgin went on to produce watches until 1964, and produced more than half of the jeweled watches from that period.
